Last night I sat down for an interview with Kerry Fleming, the co-writer and co-producer of the horror movie ‘Rock Paper Dead’. Mr. Fleming and I had the best conversation about horror, that I’ve had in a very long time. It was very refreshing to hear him talk about his horror movie and the genre the way he did, with so much enthusiasm and pride. I know that those emotions will be evident in the quality of this movie, which I can’t wait to see.

When I first heard about ‘Rock Paper Dead’ I was excited by the actors that had already signed up for roles, a group of true horror legends. ‘Cujo’ actress Dee Wallace, Michael Berryman of ‘The Hills Have Eyes’, and both Kane Hodder and Ari Lehman, who have played Jason in ‘Friday The 13th’, are all the cast list. ‘Rock Paper Dead’ also stars ‘X-Men’ actor Bruce Davison and Mikaela Hoover of the 2014 hit ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’. If the cast wasn’t impressive enough, Victor Miller who wrote the screenplay for the original ‘Friday the 13th’, is ‘Rock Paper Dead’s other co-writer. Michael Coulombe will be directing. Coulombe has been involved wih many movies over the years including: ‘Ax’, ‘Stitch’ (2014), ‘Seance :The Summoning’ (2011), ‘Some Guy Who kills People’ (2011) and ‘Edges Of Darkness’ (2008). I mean wow, who could not be excited about this movie with a line up like that?”

‘Rock Paper Dead’ follows the story of Peter Harris, a serial killer that is known as ‘The Doll Maker’. Peter has just been released from an asylum and is returning to his ancestral home. Peter is trying his best to control himself, but when he meets a beautiful woman everything begins to unravel.

KM ‘Tell us a little about you.”

KF ‘I grew up on Staten Island, then I spent twenty years in Connecticut before moving to the capital. My bill paying job is with the government. I work air traffic security. Actually, the move from Connecticut to Washington inspired me to kick the movie into high gear.”

KM ‘What is your favorite part about making ‘Rock Paper Dead’ so far ?”

KF ‘It would have to be my Skype sessions with Victor, laying the ground work for ‘Rock Paper Dead’. We had a lot of fun writing it. My wife would come into the room after hearing us laughing through the door saying “I thought you two were supposed to be writing’. We wrote R.P.D with particular actors in mind. We also recently changed the ending by adding a new, big twist. The writing process never stops. We really wanted to do this for people who like horror, including Victor and myself.”

KM “When will you start filming and when can we expect to see ‘Rock Paper Dead’ released?”

KF ” Right now R.P.D. is in pre-production. We expect to start filming this summer and see release in 2016.”

KM “Is there any advice you could give people who are coming into the movie industry, and what would it be?”

KF ” Find out everything you can about the path you’re going to choose. If you want to be a writer, take classes, join groups, there are a lot of writing groups on Facebook. One of the great things about the world we live in is that there is so much information at your finger tips. Learn everything you can, but you have to have some talent to begin with.”

KM “Okay, here’s the hard question, what is your favorite horror movie?”

KF ” Ouch, it’s so hard to pick just one.”

KM “Ok, pick two.”

KF “I have to say ‘Friday the 13th’ and ‘The Exorcist’. I was raised Catholic. We’re taught that demons are real. That movie gave me nightmares. When I first moved here I went and visited the stairs from the movie. I ran up and down them and took photos from both the top and bottom. My dad and I went to see the ‘The Hills Have Eyes’ in the theater. It gave my dad nightmares. I wish he was still here. I wonder what he would say about Michael Berryman being in our movie. ”

We also talked about everything from ‘Jaws’ to the trend of remakes and reboots, to the style that ‘Rock Paper Dead’ will be filmed in. We also talked about some details of the movie that I can’t share at this time. The bottom line is that this movie is being made by true horror fans with a cast that’s to die for. I am truly excited about ‘Rock Paper Dead’ and I can not wait to see the finished film.
