In honor of Stephen King’s birthday an announcement came that not only will there be a film adaption of King’s ‘The Dark Tower‘, there will be a companion television series. When the film was first proposed, a spin-off series was already secretly attached.

The film, starring Idris Elba as gunslinger Roland Deschain and Matthew McConaughey as the villainous “Man in Black”, is set to open in theaters on February 17, 2017. The show will explore the characters’ back story and will focus on the fourth book in King’s series, ‘Wizard and Glass‘.

MRC and Sony Pictures will be backing not only the film, but also the series. ‘The Dark Tower’ series will begin filming next year and premiering some time in 2018 with between 10 to 13 episodes, depending on the script. The film’s director Nikolaj Arcel will be directing the series, as well as co-writing the show along with Andres Thomas. The two will serve as executive producers along with Jeff Pinker, Ron Howard and Brian Grazer.  There is no word yet who will be cast in the series or which network will air it. I would wager that multiple networks will be vying for the honor.
