Director Ari Aster‘s 2017 film, Hereditary, is hailed as one of the most frighting films of the past decade. Now, he has begun production on his next project, a still-untitled genre film that will star Jack Reynor, Florence Pugh, and Will Poulter.
According to Collider, Vilhem Blomgren, William Jackson Harper, Ellora Torchia, and Archie Madekwe will co-star.
Pugh and Reynor will play a couple that travels to Sweden to visit their friend’s rural hometown for its fabled mid-summer festival. What begins as an idyllic retreat quickly devolves into an increasingly violent and bizarre competition at the hands of a pagan cult.
I’m in pre-production for my next film which will be shooting in Hungary. A24 is doing that as well, and that is technically a horror film,” Aster recently told THR. “It’s Scandinavian folk horror.”
A24 is both producing and financing the film, which will be their largest production so far.
The story centers a young couple visiting an isolated Swedish village. Over the course of their vacation, they discover that its residents participate in an eccentric set of seasonal traditions.
The film, set in Sweden but filmed in Hungary, will feature a massive set which includes a 15-building village built for the film.
