Short Film Review: BFF Girls (2018)

Daniel XIII; the result of an arcane ritual involving a King Diamond album, a box of Count Chocula, and a copy of Swank magazine, is a screenwriter, director, producer, actor, artist, and reviewer of fright flicks…Who hates ya baby?

A gaggle of anime otaku femmes (played by Allison Maier, Jessica Shipp, and Syndey Thomas respectively) discuss periods and fend off the pervy advances of their talking cat, Neko Sensei (voiced by Laurence R. Harvey from The Human Centipede sequels). Meanwhile on a planet far away from our own, super pervert  Fabuloso Doom (Lawrence Sykkmon) consults with his evil magic mirror (voiced by Dana Snyder) about how he can conquer our comely, though decidedly off-limits legally, heroines and stay eternally young and beautiful…which of course he interprets as a need to consume period blood (as anyone would). To that need he unleashes his evil monster Anti-Flow (Lea Enslin) which triggers our heroines transformation into the BFF (Beautiful Fantasy Flower ) Girls (played by Marilyn Chung, Jessica Nam, Carolann Utley) and a bloody good battle ensues!
If you’ve ever wondered what Sailor Moon would be like it it were created by Lloyd Kaufman, and who hasn’t really, BFF Girls is the flick for you! Filled with gross out humor and anime tropes in equal measure this is one for the “bat-shit insane” record books (of which there are a surprising number I assure you)…you have super powers, gallons of period blood, a vain intergalactic villain…what could go wrong with that award winning recipe? Nothin’ that’s fucking what!
The only negative I had with BFF Girls is that I want more of it! This is too solid and entertaining a concept to be contained to just one short…and even though there is a hint at what may come, I have no idea if there are actually plans to produce more…
If you dig on magical girl anime and aren’t easily offended, or get all tingly for Troma (or both), then you need to see BFF Girls immediately…you’re life will be forever altered in strange and meaningful ways…okay, that’s bullshit; but you’ll have a good time and that’s that!
