Next year Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga return as Ed and Lorraine Warren in The Conjuring 3, which has been said to be very different from its predecessors.
During a conversation with Bloody-Disgusting, producer James Wan gave details of the film’s plot and reinforced that the film is based on a true story.

It’s not necessarily based on an artifact but it’s based on one of the Warrens’ case files,” Wan said.

All the Conjuring films are based on the case files, so they’re more based on the true story aspect of the real life Warrens. I think that’s important. It’s important that the mothership stays true to the inspiration of the real people. The spinoffs are where we get to have more fun and do weird and wonderful crazy things. The mothership of it being the Conjuring films, we want it to come back to the real stuff.

It’s this guy who was on trial for committing a murder,” Wan stated. “I think it’s the first time in America’s history where the defendant used possessions as a reason, as an excuse.”

Wan could be referring to the trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson, also known as the “Devil Made Me Do It” case. The case was the first to use the possession defense. On November 24, 1981, in Brookfield, Connecticut, Arne Cheyenne Johnson was convicted of first-degree manslaughter for the killing of his landlord, Alan Bono. After the court deemed the defense unprovable even though Johnson’s neighbors testified to seeing supernatural events. Johnson was sentenced to 10 to 20 years, but only served 5.

Michael Chaves, who directed The Curse of La Llorona for Wan will be directing The Conjuring‘s third installment. Wan seems to be very impressed by Chaves film which opens in theaters on April 19, 2019.

He definitely did,” Wan said. “I feel like he’s this young up and coming filmmaker in this world. He’s a guy that understands how these films work. He’s really great working with actors and I feel like that’s something I want and need to work with, someone that people like Patrick and Vera would feel comfortable with.”

The Conjuring 3 is just one of the films in the works for the Conjuring Universe. The third  Annabelle movie and the new spin-off of The Conjuring 2, The Crooked Man are on their way. The Conjuring 2 spin-off and prequel The Nun (review) was just released on Blu-ray and DVD.
