Movie Review: Bad Girls (2021)

Daniel XIII; the result of an arcane ritual involving a King Diamond album, a box of Count Chocula, and a copy of Swank magazine, is a screenwriter, director, producer, actor, artist, and reviewer of fright flicks…Who hates ya baby?

Those eponymous Bad Girls, Val (Morgan Shaley Renew), Mitzi (Senethia Dresch), and Carolyn (Shelby Lois Guinn) by name, are (metaphorically) balls deep in one hell of an orgy of sex and violence as they rob and fuck their way on a roadtrip down Mexico way and sweet, sweet freedom.
Along the way, our anti-heroines kidnap some rock stars, Bard Gainsworth (Cleveland Langdale) of Christmas Tits and Zerox Rhodesia (Micah Peroulis) of Poltergasm to be precise, which adds to the “sex” quotient mentioned up yonder, not to mention adding fistfuls of drugs (including theta from co-writer/director Christopher Bickel’s 2017 flick The Theta Girl)… so yeah, this turns into a complete psychotronic experience right fuckin’ quick!
Will Val and the gals make it through this ballet of bullets (and the occasional knife), boobs, and bloodshed intact? Yeah, like I’d really tell you that…
Because you cats n’ creeps dig on comparisons, let’s go with: Bad Girls is like the end result of a cinematic three-way between Jack Hill, William Grefé, and Russ Meyer (who’s 1965 female-centric crime caper exploitation classic Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! had to have influenced this picture directly)… but hot damn does Bickel (along with co-writer Shane Silman) create a wicked world that operates on it’s own twisted terms and is absolutely jam-packed with spraying blood, hallucinogenic imagery, mind-warping editing, and a nihilistic streak a mile long… though the film does bring some laughs to the forefront from time to time…
Adding to the ghoulish goodness at hand are some fantastic performances including Dresch and Guinn as vicious yet infinitely engaging girls gone wrong, Jonathan Benton as Rusty, a motel desk clerk who’d do anything to escape the banality of his current existence,  Langdale and Peroulis as a pseudo-Greek chorus discussing art and philosophy as a story unfolds that has both of those items in spades (albeit with a gnarly punk rock aesthetic slathered on top), and Mike Amason (who was absolutely aces as Papa Shotgun in the aforementioned The Theta Girl, and continues the trend here) & Dove Dupree as the good cop/bad cop duo looking to put the kibosh on our deadly damsels.
But for my money, the best work comes from Renew who’s amazing features have the uncanny ability to display sweetness as well as absolutely, ball-crushingly psychotic energy at the same fuckin’ time! Along with that, she absolutely owns this flick, and the fact that she damn well knows it infuses her performance with cocksure swagger and over-the-top lunacy in equal measure!
Bottom line; Bad Girls is punk rock exploitation film-making done to a fuckin’ turn and served up with blood red sauce… so dig the fuck in already!
