A husband struggles with his wife’s dangerous obsession with the supernatural in director Shan Serafin  horror-thriller The Believer

The film tells the story of “an out-of-work scientist facing mental deterioration who finds he may be battling his wife’s obsession with demonic activity. Lucas is an out-of-work nuclear scientist, struggles with tension in his marriage after his wife Violet mysteriously terminates her pregnancy without his consent. As Lucas’ physical health begins to inexplicably deteriorate, Violet’s behavior grows increasingly bizarre and he seeks clarity from his therapist Dr. Benedict. Exhausted by his job search, strange events begin to occur in the home and his medical condition progressively declines. Benedict recommends they try an alternative therapy, but it only makes matters worse. Lucas questions Benedict’s effectiveness as his grip on reality begins to fade. Violet’s deceitful behavior arouses his ever-deepening suspicions, and after a visit from two mysterious guests, her insidious behavior becomes disturbingly pervasive. Lucas’ anger and frustration turn to fear as Violet’s sinister intentions are revealed.”

Sophie Kargman (‘Violet’), Aidan Bristow (‘Lucas’), Billy Zane (‘Dr. Benedict’), Susan Wilder (‘Charlotte’), Lindsey Ginter (‘Gus’), and Robbie Goldstein (‘Old Man’) star in this dark film produced by William Day Frank, Joshua Minyard, Sophie Kargman, Aidan Bristow, and Shan Serafin.

This is a film about losing trust in your spouse — to the extreme — to the point where you’re sitting across the table from the love of your life, wondering if she’s about to plunge a knife in your trachea,” said filmmaker Shan Serafin. “My goal is to take this domestic paranoia and multiply it by a hundred in a character who’s slowly, relentlessly, permanently losing his grip on reality, who’s no longer sure if he isn’t the one plunging a knife in someone’s throat. It’s an ambitious story to tell, especially in today’s divisive climate, and I’m continually awed by what our insanely-talented actors do on screen.”

The Believer is out on April 2, 2021, on DVD and VOD, from Freestyle Media.
