She has dealt with witchy girls, slept cheek by jowl with “freaks”, inhabited a haunted hotel, and even prosecuted a double murderer. But now Sarah Paulson will step into the skin of Mari, the mother of a young woman named Shannan, who is one of many escorts and prostitutes to fall victim to a serial killer.
Paulson has been cast to star in the Amazon Studios’ serial killer thriller, Lost Girls. The movie tells the story of a real life serial killer on Long Island, who was often referred to by the media as the “Gilgo Beach Killer”. But due to the fact that many of the killer’s victims were sex workers, who were found on Craigslist, the killer was dubbed with the more familiar moniker of the “Craigslist Ripper” .
Documentary filmmaker Liz Garbus will direct the film based on Michael Werwie’s screen adaptation of Robert Kolker’s  book Lost Girls: An Unsolved American Mystery (2013). This will be Garbus’ first directorial effort outside of the genre of documentary film. Her style may greatly benefit the movie by giving it a deeper sense of realism, thus making it less of a typical feature and more a docudrama.
Lost Girls will be shot on a budget of approximately $8 million, and producers are hoping to begin shooting on location in New York this spring.
