The Stranger With My Face International Film Festival, which takes it’s name from the title of a young adult horror fiction novel written by Lois Duncan, is returning May 4th – 7th for its fifth edition. The four day festival will be held in Tasmania’s capital city of Hobart, and will include screenings, conferences, workshops, exhibitions and a number of year round “satellite events”.

The festival specifically showcases the work of women directors, as well as exploring female perspectives within the realm of genre film.  It has also become an important resource in Australia for genre film, and takes great pride in its involvement with the Women in Horror movement.

Festival Director Briony Kidd expressed just how relevant of such a festival is in this day and age, when she said, “Events like this are needed more than ever, with women’s rights under threat around the world. Women are angry, and they have a lot to say. Genre filmmaking is enriched by that sense of urgency and energy and we’re seeing more and more extraordinary films directed by women emerging from the indie scene. But they’re often not as visible as they deserve to be, and that’s where Stranger With My Face comes in. Our mission is to celebrate these films and bring them to a broader audience.”

The submission period for both feature-length films and short films is now open.  All films must be made after January 1st of 2016 to be eligible for consideration. The festival is inclusive to many subcategories within the horror genre,  allowing films based in Gothic melodrama, dark fantasy, dystopian sci-fi, horror comedy, animation, documentary and  also experimental hybrids to qualify for the selective festival lineup.

Filmmakers of all genders may submit their films, however, only films made by those who identify as women can qualify for award eligibility.

An addition to the festival in 2016, the Attic Lab, will be returning to the festival in 2017. The “Lab” is a program for supporting and mentoring women directors by providing a forum within the festival to “pitch new projects”. Further details about this years “Lab”will be made available soon.
