With a world wide gross of 253 million dollars, Annabelle: Creation is now the most profitable horror film of the year, beating Get Out’s 252 million. Neither is a shabby haul, with both films far exceeding expectations.
However Get Out being both an original I.P. and critically adored had many rooting for it to succeed over Annabelle: Creation, the fourth film in The Conjuring Universe and a prequel to the not very well liked at all Annabelle, released back in 2014.
Overall it’s been an underwhelming year not just for horror, but movies in general, with several of the lowest box office weekends in recent history, and a steady stream of high profile flops. For every Get Out there seemed to be at least two releases like A Cure For Wellness.
With It released this weekend and on track to pull in more than a few pennies , there’s still plenty of time for the year to turn things around. Here’s hoping this Halloween will be one to remember.
