Andy Muschietti has a lot of irons in the fire right now. Hot off the heels of IT‘s huge premiere this past weekend came the announcement that part 2 has entered production. Now, word has come via that Muschietti has signed for another film, this time instead of dark entities that appear as clowns, he’ll be dealing with vampires.
Paramount Pictures has just acquired the rights to Dracul, a prequel to Bram Stoker’s Dracula. This is the first time that the Stoker estate has authorized a project. While it has not been revealed exactly in what capacity Muschietti will be working we do know that IT producers Barbara Muschietti (Mama) and Roy Lee (Blair Witch) are also attached to the project. Paramount’s Vanessa Joyce and Miri Yoon of Vertigo will be overseeing the project.
The film, penned by Bram Stoker’s great-grand nephew, Dacre Stoker, and J.D. Barker, is set in 1869. In the film young Bram Stoker confronts the vampire while writing the tale that would become legendary.
The film is destined to be part of Universal’s new Dark Universe that kicked off with The Mummy earlier this year. The Wolf Man, Frankenstein, The Bride of Frankenstein, and The Invisible Man will also be remade down the line along with others.
