Two years ago the ‘Jurassic Park’ franchise returned in a big way with ‘Jurassic World’, from director Colin Trevorrow. Now, the sequel is underway, this time with J.A. Bayona in the director’s chair. Will the new film be a sequel to ‘Jurassic World’ or ‘Jurassic Park’? Bayona answered that question yesterday.

During an interview with CinemaBlend.com about his upcoming film ‘A Monster Calls’, Bayona stated that ‘Jurassic World 2’ will be both.

That’s a good question! I think somehow it’s both. It’s a very good question, and what we are doing is a sequel to Jurassic World, but it’s definitely the fifth chapter of a longer saga. It’s very interesting. It’s always tricky, but you need to find a balance in what people expect to find, and the new stuff you’re bringing to the story. And I think the story is looking for a connection between Jurassic World and Jurassic Park – more than Jurassic World did.”

Cinema Blend went on to ask Bayona about a comment made by Trevorrow last year. Trevorrow mentioned that the helicopter accident in ‘Jurassic World’ would be key to the sequel’s story line.

Sure. I think what this film does is it’s the second chapter of the story that started in Jurassic World, and it’s open to a third chapter too. It’s very interesting in the way that we’re approaching the story, and where we are leading the story. We’re leading the story to a place that the audience is not expecting, and that the audience is not expecting, and that’s always exciting when you do a sequel.”

Production is set to begin early next year. Both Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard will be reprising their roles in part 2 which has a title that has not been announced at this point. ‘Wayward Pines’ actor Toby Jones and Rafe Spall (Prometheus) have joined the cast of the sequel.

In ‘Jurassic World’, a new theme park is built on the original site of Jurassic Park. The park’s newest attraction is a massive genetically engineered dinosaur. When it escapes it’s enclosure it sets off a chain of events putting everyone on the island in danger.
