Last year we told you that a remake of Maniac Cop was on it’s way. After a long delay, it is finally entering production. The film will be a modern adaption of William Lustig’s 1988 genre classic, with Nicolas Winding Refn (The Neon Demon) and Lene Børglum (The Neon Demon) producing. John Hyams (Z Nation, Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning) will be directing from the script penned by Ed Brubaker (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) and Refn, Variety reports.
Set in the present day, Maniac Cop follows a L.A. police officer who is determined to reveal the truth about the brutal murders of innocent people by one of her fellow cops.
Unlike the original, the reboot of the film will not be pure horror, but more of a “contemporary action thriller”, which will make it very different from the original.
In the 1988 version, an ex police officer is killing people on the streets. Jack Forest (Bruce Campbell) finds himself the main suspect for the killings, but detective Frank McCrae (Tom Atkins) doesn’t believe it. Together Forrest, his girlfriend and Detective McCrae set out to find the real killer before he can strike again.
The original cast includes Campbell, Atkins, Laurene Landon, Robert Z’Dar, and Richard Roundtree. The new film is currently casting.
We will update you when we know more. In the meantime, here is the original trailer.
