BBC’s Ghostwatch made waves in the UK back in 1992. Starring journalists and television stars, many fans believed what they were watching was real when the group investigated the most haunted house in Britain.
The genre streaming service Shudder is releasing the faux documentary for the first time in the US. Produced as part of the anthology series Screen One, Ghostwatch was aired like a live investigation, not a film, and was banned after 30,000 panicked calls to BBC in only an hour. It never re-aired in the UK again because of the panic it caused. And it was never released on DVD.
Michael Parkinson, Sarah Greene, Mike Smith, Craig Charles, Gillian Bevan, Brid Brennan, Michael Wesson, Cherise Wesson, and Chris Miller co-star in the film, directed by Lesley Manning, that spooked viewers so much one woman called in asking for money because her paratrooper husband pooped his pants. Back in the 90’s paranormal shows were not aired like they are these days, there were no series like Ghost Adventures or Paranormal Witness, making Ghostwatch seem real and terrifying.
