20th Century Studios is doubling down on the Predator franchise. It is getting not one but two installments, a movie, and a series, set to be released in 2025.
The Predator mythos stretches back to 1987, with Arnold Schwarzenegger’s iconic performance. Subsequent sequels explored diverse settings and characters from Danny Glover battling the Predator in a dystopian Los Angeles to a group of ruthless killers facing the creature in a deadly game.
The first new movie to arrive will be Predator: Badlands. Badlands inherits this legacy of genre-bending action and promises to add another thrilling chapter. It is from director Dan Trachtenberg, who is behind 2022’s Predator film Prey, which landed the number one spot on our “Top 10 Movies of 2022” list.
Prey centers on Naru, a skilled warrior of the Comanche Nation. She fights to protect her tribe against one of the first highly-evolved Predators to land on Earth.
“After ‘Prey’s’ success, we knew we had to push boundaries,” Trachtenberg has stated. “Badlands takes the hunter-versus-hunted dynamic into unexplored territory.”
The second Predator project for next year is an animated series from Weta Digital. While the details surrounding the project are still being kept quiet, studio president Steve Asbell did have this to say:
“The animated project allows us to explore Predator mythology in ways live-action couldn’t achieve,” Asbell notes. “We’re breaking new ground while honoring what fans love.”
While you wait to learn more, if you haven’t seen Prey, which I called “the best Predator movie in two decades” in my review, I highly recommend that you do so ASAP. You can stream it now on Hulu.
