Forty years after sparking controversy and becoming a cult classic, Silent Night, Deadly Night is set to make a terrifying return. Cineverse has acquired global rights to reboot the iconic horror franchise.
Mike P. Nelson, the visionary director behind the horror films Wrong Turn and V/H/S/85, will helm the new movie. Nelson also co-wrote it with Scott J. Schneid and Dennis Whitehead, the original film’s executive producers, who will also serve as producers of the reboot.
“I have always been a huge fan of Silent Night, Deadly Night and can’t wait to bring Mike’s vision to fans of iconic slashers,” said Brandon Hill, Executive Director of Acquisitions at Cineverse. “As we have seen this year, there continues to be incredible demand for independent horror films, and we believe this can deliver strong audiences from theatrical to home entertainment and streaming.”
Nelson expressed his excitement about the project, stating, “The opportunity to work with producers involved with the original Silent Night, Deadly Night on this project – and to partner with the team responsible for releasing and marketing Terrifier 3 in such a creative and successful way (no pressure) – is an honor. I’m looking forward to getting production underway, and sharing my new take on this compelling story.”
Released in 1984, the original was directed by Charles E. Sellier Jr., founder and president of Grizzly Adams Productions. It starred Lilyan Chauvin, Toni Nero, and Robert Brian Wilson. In the film, little Billy witnessed his parents getting killed by Santa after being warned by his senile grandpa that Santa punishes the naughty. Now Billy is 18 and out of the orphanage, and he has just become Santa himself.
