At a time when films like Vicious are experiencing multiple delays, Paramount has announced that the new remake of Stephen King’s The Running Man will arrive early. Initially set to be released on November 21, it will open in theaters on November 7, 2025.
Known for films like Shaun of the Dead and Baby Driver, director Edgar Wright has teased that his movie is darker than the 1987 adaptation. The original (trailer below) saw Arnold Schwarzenegger play a falsely convicted police officer who gets his shot at freedom. He must participate in a TV game show where convicts and runners battle killers for their freedom.
Following his role in Twisters, Glen Powell is set to play Ben Richards. Ben is a desperate man who joins a deadly game show to save his sick daughter.
Wright, who will honor the original story’s vision, described his approach on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, explaining:
“I think in this day and age… when remakes are done well is if there’s something else to add or there’s a different take on it. The problem is sometimes recently like remakes are just kind of facsimiles of the original film, and I don’t really get that excited about a lot of them, because they feel like sort of karaoke versions of the originals.”
The film features a talented cast. Josh Brolin, from the Avengers franchise and No Country for Old Men, stars alongside Lee Pace, David Zayas, Michael Cera, and Powell.
Watch The Running Man when it hits theaters on November 7, 2025. In the meantime, we highly recommend reading the book.
