The 2025 Oscar nominations have been announced, and the horror genre is well-represented. Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu and The Substance made the list in multiple categories. In total, Nosferatu received four nominations, and The Substance received five.

Nosferatu, which I called a “masterpiece of gothic horror” in my review, is directed by Robert Eggers and inspired by the 1922 film. It is now out on VOD and digital. In the film, Lily-Rose Depp’s Ellen wrestles with anguish as Count Orlok’s (Bill Skarsgård) spell pulls her in. Those who love her seek help from Willem Dafoe’s Professor Von Franz, but is it too late? Meanwhile, bloodcurdling imagery and a city gripped by fear paint a vivid picture of the horrors to come.

In The Substance, Demi Moore’s character, Elisabeth Sparkle, is a celebrity aerobics show host fired on her 50th birthday due to her age. Desperate, Elisabeth doesn’t think twice when a mysterious scientist approaches her. Out of desperation and vanity, she accepts his offer. She is given an experimental chemical to revert her to her “younger, more beautiful, more perfect” self. However, the dream Elisabeth has been sold will soon turn into a nightmare. The Substance is now streaming.

Best Costume Design

Nosferatu is going up against Gladiator II, which admittedly had great costumes. And, of course, it’s no surprise that Wicked made the same list.

Best Original Screenplay

The body horror film The Substance is going up against titles such as The Brutalist, starring Adrien Brody, the film Anora, and September 5.

Best Makeup and Hairstyling

Nosferatu is in the running alongside its fellow horror film, The Substance. Wicked also makes the list.

Best Cinematography

Nosferatu competes with Dune: Two and The Brutalist for the Best Cinematography award. But let’s be honest: Nosferatu should easily win this award.

Best Production Design

Once again, Nosferatu, The Brutalist, and Wicked make the list.

Best Actress in a Leading Role

Demi Moore makes the cut for her role in The Substance.

Best Director

Coralie Fargeat has received a nomination for The Substance.

Best Picture

In a shocking turn of events, the horror film The Substance has been nominated alongside The Brutalist and Dune Two.

The 2025 Oscars will be held on March 2. Watch it live on ABC at 7 p.m. EST and 4 p.m. PT.
