Fresh off its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, the buzzworthy horror movie Together has been acquired by NEON. According to Variety, this is a significant deal and the first major acquisition of this year’s festival.
The film stars real-life spouses Alison Brie (“Glow”) and Emmy nominee Dave Franco (Neighbors). Together marks the feature film debut of writer-director Michael Shanks.
The film is described as “a meta spin on the body horror film.” It “follows a codependent couple that moves to the remote countryside to become even closer. And they do, on a nightmarish physical level, thanks to a supernatural force.”
Variety details the intense bidding war for the film, including A24 and Mubi. Sources indicate that bidding reached well over $10 million, with one source even suggesting a figure as high as $15 million, making it one of the biggest deals in Sundance history.
NEON is currently riding a wave of success after the $126 million box office hit Longlegs was released last year. Longlegs star Maika Monroe will also appear in NEON’s upcoming vampire movie Brides. NEON is also behind the Osgood Perkins-directed adaptation of Stephen King’s The Monkey, which is set to be released in theaters this February.
