If you’re a fan of reality TV, odds are you’ve seen writer-producer James Sunshine‘s work on series like Hell’s Kitchen, Big Brother, Project Runway, and more. Sunshine has now made the leap to directing with his feature debut, Killing Mary Sue. I had the pleasure of talking with Sunshine about the film and more in our interview. We discussed everything from his work in reality TV to the film’s inspiration and what it took to make it. Watch our interview below.
Now, let me tell you about the movie. Killing Mary Sue is an action-packed, fun-filled ride that follows Mary Sue (Sierra McCormick), a party-obsessed, drug-loving wild child whose politician stepfather, played by Dermot Mulroney, is sick of her trouble-making ways. How does he plan to handle things? He has hired hitmen to kill Mary Sue before she can cost him his next election. However, things quickly go off the rails.
The film’s cast includes Jake Busey, Sean Patrick Flanery, French Stewart, and more alongside Mulroney and McCormick. In fact, Dermot Mulroney took home the Best Actor award and Sierra McCormick the Best Actress award at this weekend’s Independent Filmmakers Showcase L.A. Film Festival. The film also took home an award for Best Picture.
Stay tuned for news about the film’s release this June. You don’t want to miss it!
