Buckle up! Dark Star Pictures and Red Water Entertainment are taking you on a wild ride. They have teamed up to acquire the North American distribution rights for the outrageously original genre mashup, Chainsaws Were Singing. This over-the-top horror-comedy film from Estonia has been making waves on the international festival circuit. Now, it’s slashing your way soon.
What in the World is Chainsaws Were Singing?!
Imagine this: “Monty Python meets Texas Chainsaw Massacre meets Les Misérables.” Yes, you read that right. Chainsaws Were Singing is being described as a “deliriously unhinged cinematic experience.”
So, the movie begins with two new lovers whose budding romance is cut short – quite literally – by a chainsaw-wielding killer. This gruesome event sets off an anarchic odyssey packed with gore, grief, and musical numbers! Shot guerrilla-style, the film is a full-throttle love letter to B-movie chaos and crowd-pleasing exploitation cinema. So, if you’re a fan of bizarre, boundary-pushing films, this one is for you.
A Festival Darling
Chainsaws Were Singing arrives with some serious street cred, having already snagged major awards and official selections at top-tier festivals. That includes Best Horror Movie at Fantastic Fest 2024, followed by a Special Jury Mention in the New Flesh Competition for Best First Feature at Fantasia 2024. Also, it won Best Film at Buenos Aires Rojo Sangre 2024 and was an official selection at the Sitges Film Festival. It also screened at Tallinn Black Nights, Night Visions, and numerous other festivals.
What the Distributors Are Saying
Avi Federgreen, President of Red Water Entertainment, couldn’t be more excited: “We’re always on the lookout for films that break the mold, and Chainsaws Were Singing does that with a chainsaw and a show tune. It’s rare to find something this original that also connects so instantly with audiences.”
Michael Repsch, who negotiated the acquisition deal on behalf of Red Water and Dark Star (along with Justyna Koronkiewicz of Media Move representing the filmmakers), echoed the enthusiasm:
“This is the kind of insane, fearless cinema that reminds you why we go to the movies. Chainsaws Were Singing is destined to become a midnight classic. We’re thrilled to unleash it on North American audiences together with Red Water Entertainment.”
Prepare to witness the glorious, gory, one-of-a-kind spectacle of Chainsaws Were Singing when it hits theaters this fall, followed by a digital and on-demand rollout. We’ll keep you posted as more details emerge.
