The iconic 1997 film Event Horizon is revered for its masterful blend of psychological terror and visceral gore. Yet, the movie only scratched the surface of the terrifying cosmic horror. Now, a new comic book series is taking fans deeper into that darkness.
Event Horizon: Dark Descent, a five-part limited comic series by Christian Ward and Tristan Jones, is published by IDW Publishing (under the IDW Dark banner. The 2025 series finally unveils what truly transpired aboard the starship Event Horizon before the events of the movie.
The initial two issues have already thrown readers headlong into the Event Horizon‘s doomed first mission. It details the crew’s troubled backgrounds and culminates in the ship’s journey through the Gravity Drive into an unknown dimension.
Issue #2 confirms the hellish nature of this realm. It depicts a universe where “every inch of space is occupied by swirling, bloody flesh bubbling endlessly in an eternal cascade of wailing gore.” Despite this extreme imagery, the most significant moment of terror is yet to come: the infamous “blood orgy” sequence.
The film hints that after the Event Horizon activated its Gravity Drive and entered the hell dimension. The crew was infected by a demonic entity. This leads them to commit acts of unprecedented violence, self-mutilation, and murder. This horrific event is known among fans as the “blood orgy,” of which only brief, disturbing snippets made it into the 1997 theatrical release.
With an entire comic series dedicated to the original crew’s story, fans are now poised to see the sequence in its entirety. The arrival of this long-demanded scene was directly confirmed by Event Horizon: Dark Descent writer Christopher Ward in an interview with Screen Rant. Ward shared his intent for the series:
“My goal was that I wanted to write a story that would change how one might view the film… That said, the one element of fan service that is in the series is the infamous ‘blood orgy’ sequence that was cut from the film. You’ll have to pick up issue #4 to see how we’re using that, though. That issue will make you cry and recoil in equal measure.”
The ‘blood orgy’ is not the only reason for fans to celebrate the series. Dark Descent also significantly expands the Event Horizon lore beyond what was seen in the movie. The comic fully visualizes the grotesque hell dimension that was only alluded to in the film. The series introduces a wholly original character: Paimon, a specific demonic entity described as a burned, scarred corpse with an elongated, crown-like head and sliced, eyeless facial features bearing a demonic symbol. This is a significant departure from the film, which only showed corrupted versions of human characters.
The success of Event Horizon: Dark Descent could signal a resurgence of the franchise, potentially paving the way for future installments. While the current series acts as a compelling prequel, a true sequel exploring the fate of Captain Miller (Laurence Fishburne) or the continued trauma of the survivors would offer fans long-awaited closure.
Regardless of future projects, the fact that fans are finally getting the full, unexpurgated story of the Event Horizon, culminating in the legendary “blood orgy,” is an incredible development for the franchise.
As confirmed by Ward, readers will finally witness the scene they were denied nearly three decades ago when Event Horizon: Dark Descent #4 is released on December 24, 2025. Looking for more comics and graphic novel news? We’ve got you covered. You can find it HERE.
