To say that Apple TV’s horror-comedy series “Widow’s Bay” is a hit is a massive understatement. It picked up eight statuettes and locked in frontrunner status heading into the Primetime Emmy ceremony on September 14.
Created by Katie Dippold, the series anchored a dominant evening for Apple TV, which swept 18 trophies that night, more than any rival network or streaming platform. The streamer’s impressive tally was rounded out by strong performances from Pluribus with four wins. And Margo’s Got Money Troubles and Palm Royale both got three each.
Ancient Curses vs. Small-Town Marketing
Set 40 miles off the coast of New England, the series stars Matthew Rhys as Mayor Tom Loftis, a desperately ambitious politician. He’s trying to save his dying island town by rebranding it into a premier tourist destination. Unfortunately for Tom, the locals are notoriously superstitious, cell reception is nonexistent, and everyone treats the mayor like a coward (a characterization he fully earns).
Just as his ambitious marketing campaign starts to work and tourists begin pouring onto the docks, Tom discovers that the town’s “ridiculous” folklore about ancient evils and lingering ghosts is 100% accurate. This turns his economic turnaround into a chaotic battle against ancient curses.
