After 17 long years, Friday the 13th fans finally got a brand-new entry: “Crystal Lake.” Showrunner Brad Caleb Kane launched the ambitious prequel series this week. The series may get a second season, and we hope so, because it’s absolutely fantastic. Expanding the Mysterious Lore of Crystal Lake Speaking with Deadline, Kane explained his creative vision for the series’ future seasons. Rather than focusing on a single narrative arc, he envisions exploring the entire community. The showrunner also wants to highlight eccentric townspeople like Officer Dorff, Trudy, and Crazy Ralph. This broader approach allows secondary characters to develop more deeply over time. “This is a world that I return to over and over and over again,” Deadline quotes him as saying. “I return to these movies, we all do, somehow. They became iconic for a reason. But there’s a lot we don’t know about the town. We meet these really colorful characters in the first movie, we meet Trudy and

When I first heard about a prequel series for Friday the 13th, I felt genuinely apprehensive. Crafting a TV show to build the foundation for such an iconic horror franchise is notoriously difficult to get right. However, Peacock and A24 have delivered an absolute triumph with “Crystal Lake.” As someone whose very first horror movie was Friday the 13th at nine years old, this franchise holds a special place in my heart. Ultimately, I am thrilled to report that this series is one of the absolute best things I have seen on television in a long time. A Powerhouse Lead and Deeply Human Characters The eight-episode series is led by Linda Cardellini as the infamous Pamela Voorhees, alongside young Callum Vinson as her son, Jason. Cardellini delivers an absolute powerhouse performance throughout the show. Specifically, she captures the heartbreak and raw daily struggle of a grieving mother with incredible nuance. While Pamela is undeniably unhinged, her rage feels completely tragic
