After 17 long years, Friday the 13th fans finally got a brand-new entry: “Crystal Lake.” Showrunner Brad Caleb Kane launched the ambitious prequel series this week. The series may get a second season, and we hope so, because it’s absolutely fantastic.
Expanding the Mysterious Lore of Crystal Lake
Speaking with Deadline, Kane explained his creative vision for the series’ future seasons. Rather than focusing on a single narrative arc, he envisions exploring the entire community. The showrunner also wants to highlight eccentric townspeople like Officer Dorff, Trudy, and Crazy Ralph. This broader approach allows secondary characters to develop more deeply over time.
“This is a world that I return to over and over and over again,” Deadline quotes him as saying. “I return to these movies, we all do, somehow. They became iconic for a reason. But there’s a lot we don’t know about the town. We meet these really colorful characters in the first movie, we meet Trudy and Officer Dorff and so-called Crazy Ralph, even though he turns out to have a point. But we don’t see that much of them ultimately. Some are dispatched, some are just there for momentary common comic relief.”
The showrunner continued, Kane continued, “And, you know, with a show like this, we have the opportunity to open it up and spend a little more time with them. Everybody loves, a small town show, and within the world of Friday the 13th, that just becomes more amplified and interesting.”
Blending Small-Town Drama with Supernatural Horror
Kane compares his overarching vision for the franchise to Twin Peaks’ eerie atmosphere. While peripheral residents enrich the story, Pamela and Jason remain the emotional core. Additionally, the showrunner hopes Linda Cardellini continues this journey if the show gets official approval for future seasons.
“I do have ideas for Season 2 in mind,” the showrunner pointed out. “Obviously, it’s not just Pam’s story; it’s Crystal Lake, so you have all of the peripheral characters who are interesting to me … You have the opportunity for this to be more of a Twin Peaks-y kind of vibe, with Ralph and with Dorff and Trudy and all of those characters. There’s a lot more to get into with them. But obviously, the nexus is always gonna be Pam and Jason, and their story.”
Future Plans Approach the Original Movie Timeline
Crucially, the dramatic finale of season one does not immediately overlap with the 1980 film. Kane confirmed that a potential second season would move closer toward that classic timeline. However, full narrative overlap will still take time to materialize across upcoming installments.
“It wouldn’t happen in a second season … There’s more story to tell, for the residents of Crystal Lake and to the extent that Linda wants to continue the journey with us, with Pam. So, we’ll see.” Kane said.
While we’ll keep our fingers crossed for more of the story, you can stream “Crystal Lake” now on Peacock, along with the entire original Friday the 13th franchise.
Does it Deserve a Second Season?
If you are wondering if the series should return for a second season, let me say this: I gave “Crystal Lake” a glowing review (no major spoilers). In fact, I said it was “the best thing I have watched on TV in a long time” and that it “should be required watching” for horror fans. That’s high praise! So yes, we would love for the series to continue. There’s so much potential for more stories and further exploration of the franchise.
