In The Haunted Casino (aka Dead Man’s Hand), director Charles Band and writer Domonic Muir create a storyline surrounding Matthew Dragna, the main character, who inherits an old rundown casino from his uncle, who has recently passed away. His devoted girlfriend, JJ, and a number of other pals decide to investigate the location. Slowly the movie takes a dark twist when it turns out that violent and vengeful ghosts haunt the casino. These are the ghosts of ruthless Las Vegas mobster Roy (The Word) Donahue and his evil sidekick Gil Wachetta, who both haunt the resort. The question of the movie then arises: Will Matthew and any of his buddies make it through an evening at the casino with these malevolent ghosts?
The Review
The film’s well-written script, surprising gore level, and fun jump scares make it a highly watchable movie for any horror movie fan. The first two-thirds of the movie is centered on conversations, and the characters give us an idea about the group with well-developed backgrounds. However, the talking parts of the movie are not what we’ve come for; indeed, the ghosts are! This haunted casino’s ghosts are what you’re here to watch, and although they don’t appear as much as you’d think for a ghost movie, their sudden apparition at the movie’s halfway point makes it significantly better. Although his name is prominently featured in the advertisements, Sid Haig only appears in a very few moments in the movie, despite being excellent as the group’s spectral commander. Even worse, Michael Berryman has just a few fleeting lines to deliver and never has the opportunity to shine despite sharing scenes with Haig. The group of young performers that Charles Band assembled perform their roles as the human cast of heroes well. Robin Sydney appeared in what seems like every Full Moon film for the whole 2000s, and here she was given a lead role. Most of the time, she does well; nevertheless, her brief bursts of wrath and obscenity come across as forced.
A promiscuous slot girl who seduces one of the boys is played by Jessica Morris, who went on to portray the lead in Full Moon’s The Dead Want Women and Reel Evil, both released in 2012. There are also a few dealer ghosts that initiate games of chance with far higher stakes than usual. The rest of the cast is excellent as well, with Lily Rains and Kristyn Green delivering particularly impressive performances. The production design makes the most of the limited resources and the writing is strong for a low-budget movie. If you’re a fan of Full Moon and are looking for a cheap horror film to pass the time on a Friday night, The Haunted Casino is a strong pick. After all, casino horror movies are always a strong choice for a fun night of watching a movie with family and friends.
