Via Laurene is a freelance writer and horror enthusiast. She loves horror in all types of media, be it film, books, comics, or gaming. Dark fantasy films of the 80s and 90s were her gateway into the genre. As a kid, she'd walk down the horror movie aisle of her local video store and make up stories based on the horror covers. She also writes horror fiction and poetry. Her debut poetry chapbook, "Leaving the Skin," was published in 2018. Her favorite horror film is The Howling (1981).

If you weren’t able to go to New York Comic Con at the end of last year, you may not have known there was a first time this comic was printed for release. Seven Years In Darkness is a horror fantasy comic series written and illustrated by Joe Schmalke(We Don’t Kill Spiders, The Electric Black). It was introduced at NYCC last October, but due to it’s popularity, the first issue is being reprinted, not for the second time, but for the third time! It will officially be on sale in stores April 26th, 2023, but now comic book retailers will have a fighting chance to keep them on the shelves for more than a day, maybe, thanks to these reprints.

If you aren’t familiar, Seven Years In Darkness is about a group of children sent to The Academy of Black Magic, an institute that hadn’t reopened its doors for 200 years ago prior. They will be there for seven years, but only 7 out of  72 kids who started will come out alive in the end. By the sounds of it though, not all of their journeys will be that long. Oh, also all the kids families are part of a cult and apparently the sun doesn’t shine at the academy. Sounds great for their mental health. Top-notch parenting.

Don’t miss your chance to own a copy of the first issue! Mark your calendars for this upcoming Wednesday, April 26th and rush out to your nearest comic store! There’s a good reason why this series had to keep being reprinted.
