Via Laurene is a freelance writer and horror enthusiast. She loves horror in all types of media, be it film, books, comics, or gaming. Dark fantasy films of the 80s and 90s were her gateway into the genre. As a kid, she'd walk down the horror movie aisle of her local video store and make up stories based on the horror covers. She also writes horror fiction and poetry. Her debut poetry chapbook, "Leaving the Skin," was published in 2018. Her favorite horror film is The Howling (1981).

Nietzsche once said “if you stare into the abyss, the abyss stares back at you.”

But sometimes when you stare into the abyss, it gives you a bunch of horror comics!

Good abyss! *pat pat*

For those of us who just can’t help our horror-loving hearts and wait longingly for the abyss to cough up any morsel of horror for our twisted brains to consume, you’ll be feasting come August!

No, Jack Torrance does not make a cameo in this comic.

CEX brings us a new comic called Opus & Ashes, written by Brett Seth Simon(Money Clip, Coins for the Ferryman) and illustrated by Sergi Domènech(Money Clip, Batman). This story takes us on a cabin getaway with a mother, a daughter, and her best friend. The only problem is it’s winter and there’s a blizzard, the cabin is in the middle of nowhere, and they’re trapped. Sounds relaxing! These three will have to survive the harsh conditions around them, but also each other. You’ll have to read to find out if they all make it out alive and if not, is it the environment or human nature that gets them.

They are also giving us another helping of Mother Russia, written and illustrated by Jeff McComsey (FUBAR, Son of Hitler). If you ever wished The Walking Dead was set in Russia, this is the comic series for you! We have a theme of mama bears with these comics, as Mother Russia is set in Stalingrad in 1943 and is about a Soviet sniper who risks her life to save a baby boy found amongst a horde of zombies. In this world, zombies hugely outnumber humans and a living, breathing baby is one of the rarest sights.

In this issue, CEX teases that “Svetlana finds herself forming an unlikely alliance with her former enemy in the midst of a zombie apocalypse. As the old saying goes, “the enemy of my enemy is my friend,” but in this case, the enemy happens to be a Nazi.” The stakes are rising in this issue, making it all the harder to protect the baby.

Outland Entertainment has also come out with another volume of the series, Hopeless Maine (originally a web comic), with Hopeless Maine: Inheritance. Written and illustrated by duo, Tom and Nimue Brown, this comic follows Salamandra across the haunted island of Hopeless, Maine. She meets a new friend named Owen Davies who travels with her to Pallid Rock Orphanage. Here they will face life-changing events that will test Salamandra’s powers.

Hopefully all of this promise of upcoming horror comics will feed your appetite until they come out this August. If not, check out Horror Fuel’s most recent comic and graphic novel articles and reviews for recommendations on what to read now.
