Robocop was arguably one of the best films in the 80s, with its kitschy premise (that can only work in 80s films), memorable moments, merch, and memes. Over the years, video games have been made based on the film series, but admittedly, some of them did not catch the true essence of the film. Teyon and NACON teamed up with MGM to make what is possibly the best Robocop game to date, this is Robocop: Rogue City.
Robocop: Rogue City takes players back to the mean streets of Detroit where a new mysterious crime lord is setting up shop and all the gangs of the city are auditioning to be part of the new criminal enterprise by ramping up their crime sprees, and only Robocop can help stem the tide of crime.
Now, onto the game itself! Robocop: Rogue City‘s controls are your standard FPS kind which makes it easier to learn and remember as you start playing the game. The only issue I have with the controls is how slow the aiming is when you first start the game, so you’ll have to more than likely do a lot of adjusting of these when you first start.
The game’s audio is pretty decent with the sound effects and soundtrack, it’s awesome that they got Peter Weller to come back and do the voice of Robocop himself, as it brings the film world back to life in this game world. I’ll admit, they should have had more variety when it comes to the voiceovers for the criminals you engage in combat as they all have the same voice.
The Gameplay is fun, to me anyway, as Robocop can do more than just shoot up bad guys. You earn XP for combat, finding evidence, and completing objectives. You earn these to gain skill points where you then can upgrade some of Robocop’s skills. As you play, you will also encounter a lot of potential side missions that are either short or quite involved.
Robocop: Rogue City also has dialogue choices for players as they interact with members of the public where your choices will affect how the public views you which can affect events in the game, I’m still early in it and so far I only issued one ticket but still have the public’s trust.
Overall, I’ve enjoyed Robocop: Rogue City, except for some glitches, that seem to make NPCs missing teeth, giving you options to turn on an already-on radio, or controller vibrations even after you turned them off, I still find the game fun. The combat is fun, the destructive environment is amazing (I love shooting spray paint cans as they color their surroundings), the choices you have to make, the RPG elements, and just the fact I feel like I’m in a Robocop film, Robocop: Rogue City will make you say “I’ll buy that for a dollar!”, On my scale of 1-10, Robocop: Rogue City is a 8!
Robocop: Rogue City will be coming out on November 2nd, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
