The viral horror phenomenon that took the internet by storm has now come home to consoles, spreading dreadful fear and morbid curiosity in The Mortuary Assistant: Definitive Edition. The dry spell of horror releases has been broken and after reviewing two horrible games recently, this gem has restored my faith in the genre of horror gaming!

The Mortuary Assistant: Definitive Edition puts players in the shoes of Rebecca, who just landed a job at a mortuary that is the center of local urban legends. After being called in late one night, Rebecca quickly learns that the legends are true.

Now, onto the game itself! When it comes to the game’s controls, it’s a bit difficult as the game originally was meant for keyboard and mouse, but I found using the D-pad made some of the mechanics work a little easier. Playing with headphones is a must for this game as there are ambient sounds that mess with you as you try to work, and when the big scares come!

Since this is The Mortuary Assistant: Definitive Edition there is an “Embalming only” mode where you can just embalm bodies without anything creepy going on, and you can even have a radio playing as you work, which helps break the tension as the main game is quiet!

When it comes to gameplay, the game is procedurally generated, so it’s not the same playthrough twice, which makes it interesting as there are six possible endings you can unlock and experience different demonic encounters. Some encounters come across as cheap but some can really get you! I’ve seen people say that they were encountering bugs while playing, so far from the few hours I’ve put into the game, I have not encountered anything game-breaking on the Xbox version.

Overall, I’m very impressed with The Mortuary Assistant: Definitive Edition. The concept is unique, it’s very atmospheric, the scares are good, and I can say with confidence that the hype was well warranted especially with the game being developed by one guy (Brian Clarke)! On my scale of 1-10, The Mortuary Assistant: Definitive Edition is a 10.

The Mortuary Assistant: Definitive Edition is out now on PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch.
