200th Game Review! ‘Amanda the Adventurer’

Yes, this is the 200th game review I have done for Horror Fuel! I’m planning on doing something special to commemorate this occasion, fingers are crossed it will work out, but untill then folks, here we go with the 200th game review of Amanda the Adventurer!

Amanda the Adventurer puts players in the shoes of Riley, who inherited their Aunt Kate’s home after her death. They go to the attic and start watching VHS tapes of the children’s adventure show Amanda the Adventurer, but the show’s main character Amanda becomes more and more sinister the more tapes Riley watches.

Now, onto the game itself! The controls for this game are pretty basic, with only having to use controls to move and interact with objects and puzzles in the attic along with videos of Amanda’s show. The voice acting for the game is good along with the sound design and music, making childish moments whimsical, and darker moments foreboding.

Gameplay-wise, depending on what VHS tape you’re watching, you’ll watch a short episode in which hints are within them for how to solve a puzzle afterward, some are obvious and some are slightly hidden, and depending on what you say or do in these episodes when you have to interact with Amanda could determine where the story will take you next. This is where I find weakness in the game, it’s quite repetitive as you have to die and repeat episodes. The game’s flow is not linear so it was not until I replayed for the third time I realized this.

This game is meant for eagle-eye players who can pick up on hints hidden in the background of each video resulting in them unlocking new or alternative episodes and depending on what you do, you may even find some hidden tapes giving an unsettling peak behind the show.

Overall, yes, Amanda the Adventurer is a decent game but it may not be fun for all but for those who love puzzles and figuring things out, this is definitely for them. I may have found the repetitiveness of the game not to my liking but does not mean it’s someone else’s thing. On my scale of 1-10, Amanda the Adventurer is an 8.

Amanda the Adventurer is out now for PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.
