Game Review: ‘Tormented Souls 2’

Back in 2021, I reviewed Tormented Souls by PQubed, who wanted to bring back the classic look and feel of early survival horror games for modern gamers. At the time, I gave the game an 8.5/10 as I felt it could have used more jump scares and difficulty adjustments. Well, PQubed were awesome enough to let me check out Tormented Souls 2, a big thank you for that. Let’s see how it goes this time around.

Tormented Souls 2 brings back Caroline Walker, who is taking her sister Anna to Villa Hess, as even though months have passed since the events of the first game, Anna is haunted and draws disturbing pictures of things that become real. After arriving at Villa Hess with the hopes of helping her sister, Caroline quickly learns that not all is good at this convent.

Now, onto the game itself! When it comes to the game’s controls, the best way to describe them is Modern-Tank; it feels like the old-school tank controls from older survival horror games, but they were made for the modern player. Combat controls have improved a lot since the first game, where aiming was difficult, but this time, the aiming is actually easier.

I also noticed that the look of the game has improved a lot, too, since the first one, not saying the graphics in the first game were bad, they were amazing, it’s just impressive that they upped it! The sound design is amazing (headphones are a must for the best experience), and the soundtrack screams old Resident Evil. I’m also happy to report, as it seems to be something I’ll have to look into every game for now on, there is a voice cast, meaning human actors!

There have been improvements made to the gameplay, for starters…Oh yeah, there are decent jump scares this time! Along with the increased scares, difficulty settings as well! The puzzles are fun brain teasers, the combat is rewarding, and exploration is amazing! Everything I loved about the older Survival Horror games has been brought back here, along with an intriguing story and the introduction to some interesting mechanics not seen in the first game, if I may offer a riddle.

Overall, Tormented Souls has exceeded my expectations by fixing some of what was wrong in the first game and adding some new things into this one. If you are a fan of the classic survival horror games, this one is for you. Very atmospheric, great sound, amazing monster designs, rewarding puzzles and combat, interesting story, real voice actors, and good scares, Tormented Souls 2 is a must for Halloween. On my scale of 1-10, it’s earned a 10 from me!

Tormented Souls 2 is out today for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
