A fowl of a game, Game Review: ‘Saborus’

So…yeah… QUByte Interactive made a “horror game” where you play as a chicken…

Saborus lets players take on the role of a chicken that’s attempting to escape the slaughterhouse of the meat manufacturing company Saborus.

Now. Onto the game itself! When it comes to the controls, there aren’t many, so if you decide to play this game after reading this, you should be fine. When it comes to the sound design, it needs some work as some of the sound effects loop, and some don’t fit with what it’s supposed to be, for example, the sound effect for the chicken walking is that of someone wearing shoes.

An issue I have with the voice acting, even if this is an indie game, it’s AI. At the time of writing this, I’ve contacted QUByte Interactive about getting a cast list of voice actors who worked on this game and have yet to hear back, forcing me to surmise it’s AI.

Now…the biggest crux I have with this game… the gameplay. It’s buggy as hell and stupid. Why am I so brutal about this? Well, I’m locked out of the game. I had the chicken carrying a fuse, and dropped it by accident…and the fuse went through the level’s floor. If that wasn’t annoying enough already, the game then decides to autosave right after, so after I’m killed in-game, I go back to when I dropped the fuse through the floor. In most games, if a bug like that happens and you respawn, whatever item is lost through the level’s floor respawns.

I know, you’re saying “Just restart.” Well, leading up to that point, I had a hell of a time because this game involves a lot of platforming, and it’s frustrating because they want you to land on a specific spot or else the chicken slides off, and what’s infuriating to me is that it’s clear the devs don’t understand chickens, because there is fall damage… yeah. Anyone who has either worked with/owned/or been around chickens knows, they can fly, if not outright fly, they can flutter their wings enough to slow their descent down.

Overall. I have no clue what the hell this game was trying to be. I know it’s trying to be deep with a message about animal cruelty, and we as humans suck, I get that. It’s just that the concept of the game is interesting, but I can’t explain why the chicken is super intelligent to hack computers and whatnot, but if it is explained in the game later on, it’s kind of hard when the game has game-breaking glitches that prevent anyone from proceeding further.

Unfortunately, on my scale of 1-10, I give Saborus a 1 for AI voice acting, game-breaking glitches, and poor gameplay mechanics. Even PETA would hate this game.
