Game Review: ‘Ebola Village’

Recently, I wrote about the controversy with Ebola Village and the controversy it caused among gamers. The game has been on Steam for a while, but has now been ported to consoles. Well, in a twist of fate, I’m here today with a review of the game in question by Indi Games Studio and Axyos Games. What are my thoughts after playing? Let’s see.

Ebola Village follows Maria, who goes to the village she’s from to check in on her mother after an outbreak of Ebola has started in the USSR, but the virus is doing more than killing people; it’s turning them into zombies.

Now, onto the game itself! When it comes to the controls for Ebola Village, they are your standard FPS controls, just would be nice to have a tutorial, seriously, the games I’ve reviewed lately are lacking tutorials! Other than that, the controls are responsive and just need a little tweaking in the settings.

Graphics-wise, the game is pretty good. I’m shocked that this is an indie game; some devs can’t seem to get the textures and graphics balanced right. When it comes to the sound, some work is needed. Unfortunately, there’s no English voice acting, but there are subtitles at least. The voice acting is decent for the most part.

Now…we’re in the meat and potatoes of the game and the issues many have with it. Gameplay-wise, it’s an FPS; you explore, solve puzzles, and shoot zombies/mutants. The game is pretty much a Russian Resident Evil 4. The game is one giant RE Easter egg after another. According to the official write-ups for the game, it’s claimed that the game is inspired by classic survival horror of the 90s…

I’m ripping the band-aid off; this game lacks creativity and originality. Instead of being original with an Easter egg or two in the game, paying homage to the RE franchise, it flat out coppies it. Green herbs for health, zombie villagers who throw hand tools at you, some villagers’ heads blow up into killer insect mutants, an evil corporation, keys based on card suits, and so on and so on. Even in a bizarre twist, I keep finding this little shit everywhere, seriously, what?!

To be honest, I don’t know how this game got this far in its life. There may have been some potential, but sadley with uncreative individuals at the helm, this ship sank. It’s original; no creative process went into the story. Here, I just came up with their next game, Covid Hamlet, where people get Covid and turn into zombies. Ebola Village is an insult to survival horror and a bigger insult to the fans. I thought people were being a bit harsh when they called this TEMU Resident Evil, now I understand completely.
