Oscar-winning actor Jennifer Lawrence will star in The Flood, an upcoming sci-fi thriller written, produced, and directed by Zach Cregger. Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema have announced that the film will hit theaters on August 11, 2028, Variety reports.
High-Profile Star Power Joins the Genre Project
Lawrence brings substantial acclaim and star power to Cregger’s newest venture. Best known for leading The Hunger Games franchise and winning an Academy Award for Silver Linings Playbook, she recently appeared in Die My Love opposite Robert Pattinson. Beyond The Flood, her upcoming slate includes Martin Scorsese’s thriller What Happens at Night and the prequel The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.
The Mysterious Story
While the plot remains tucked away, Cregger has revealed that it is “potentially his most unsettling story to date.” Reportedly, the central concept struck Cregger unexpectedly during a casual movie night with his wife. While watching a scene where a character boards a desolate spaceship, his wife noted that few things are more terrifying than being trapped in space. Cregger experienced a sudden breakthrough. Suddenly realizing the entire narrative blueprint in a single flash of inspiration.
“I was thinking, ‘What would be weirder and scarier than that? What could happen in this scenario that would freak me out more than this?’ And it’s never happened to me before, but in a flash, I had the whole movie explode in front of my eyes.’”
Cregger Builds on Recent Box Office and Awards Success
The project marks a quick reunion between Cregger and Warner Bros. following the success of his 2025 horror film Weapons. His 2022 horror film Barbarian was also a massive hit. Weapons also achieved major awards recognition, culminating in a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Amy Madigan’s performance as the villainous Aunt Gladys. His most recent hit film, Resident Evil, is now playing in theaters.
