As DC fans eagerly await the premiere of DC’s Clayface in theaters this month, many are wondering about another DC project: James Mangold’s new Swamp Thing movie. It’s been radio silence for a while, which usually means it’s not happening. However, that might not be true this time.
Official Status Update
At the recent Clayface premiere, DC co-CEO Peter Safran gave Deadline a reassuring update on the Swamp Thing film. Safran confirmed that writers are currently drafting the script. However, production schedules must align with Mangold’s busy slate before cameras can actually roll. Still, that’s good news for fans.
We’re working on it, absolutely … The script is being written as we speak. But it’s something we’re excited about. All these things take time – when you’ve already got a filmmaker involved, you’ve got to wait for their window [of availability] as well.” Safran told Deadline.
A Vision Rooted in Horror
First announced in 2023, Mangold described his film as dark horror tied to broader DC storylines. He envisioned the project as a clean, Gothic monster story strongly inspired by Frankenstein.
Delays and Busy Directors
Mangold has stayed incredibly busy directing Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny alongside his Star Wars project. Therefore, patience remains essential as DC Studios steadily crafts this ambitious creature feature behind closed doors.
Who is Swamp Thing?
Created in 1971 by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson, Swamp Thing is a tragic DC Comics creature who serves as nature’s elemental protector. Originally Alec Holland, a scientist transformed into a plant-human hybrid after a swamp lab explosion, he controls all vegetation through “The Green.” Alan Moore’s acclaimed 1980s run redefined his lore, shifting his stories into gothic, existential horror and making him one of comic history’s most iconic antiheroes.
The 2019 Series
Hopefully, an update on the movie will come soon, complete with a release date. In the meantime, fans can binge the “Swamp Thing” series, which unfortunately ended too soon due to budget cuts.
The fantastic 2019 ten-episode series stars Crystal Reed, Virginia Madsen, Andy Bean, and horror icon Derek Mears as Swamp Thing. Back in 2019, we interviewed actor Cuyle Carvin about his role in the series.
Produced by James Wan, the series sees Abby Arcane return home to the Marais, Louisiana, to investigate a deadly swamp-borne virus, only to uncover the town’s dark, terrifying mysteries and a monster lurking in the swamp. Here’s a look back at the series’ trailer. Stream it now on Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home.
