Game Review: ‘Total Chaos’

Before becoming a standalone title, Total Chaos was an award-winning mod of Doom II by Sam Prebble. Now, with the shadow launch by Apogee Entertainment and Infogrames, players can experience what horrors await.

Total Chaos puts players in the shoes of a Coast Guard (sic) that ended up on the island of Fort Oasis after trying to respond to an emergency call on the radio. Now stuck on the island, you must explore and survive the horrors within.

Now. Onto the game itself. When it comes to the controls, they’re alright. I feel like there’s a “slide” look to the movement when you’re walking and then stop, but continue moving forward a few inches after you stop; it’s kind of annoying. I feel like this was not truly optimized for controllers. When it comes to sound, you’ll need to lower it A LOT; it’s way too loud and could have benefited from better mixing. I really do not like the first-person view, or how it’s done; it’s in a weird fisheye view.

Graphics-wise, looking at the trailer and comparing it to what I’m playing…the trailer looks a lot better than what is in the final game. Gameplay-wise, I have yet to get to a point in the game where the resources I’ve gathered can be crafted, but while you’re being attacked and need to heal, it’s difficult to use your heals with how the resource mechanics work in this game, and I’m dying in a lot of dumb ways.

Overall, Total Chaos is rough. The overall feeling I have is that this game was not ready to be put on Xbox. The annoying fisheye view, the sliding, item management, blaring sound, and lower quality graphics. As soon as I saw the bait and switch graphics and noticed the ice skating movement, I was not fully invested in this game and was looking forward to stop playing it. Will I give this game another chance at some point? Maybe at a later date, if there have been some fixes.

On my scale of 1-10, Total Chaos is a 4/10.
