Back in 2003, one of the most horrifying games ever to hit consoles came out, and sadly was the only title in the series to see much success outside of Japan, Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly. Now, the terror returns after being rebuilt from the ground up, that’s right, this is not enhanced, this is an honest-to-goodness overhaul to make the expieriance to new players memorable, while offering new things to scare returning fans. I’m grateful for the honor given to me by KOEI TECMO and Team NINJA for allowing me to return to Minakami Village.
Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE follows the Amakura twins, Mio and Mayu, who were visiting a stream they used to go to as children one last time before the area is flooded, but Mayu wandered off into the woods. Mio chases after her, and the twins end up in the lost Minakami Village that is forever shrouded in night as it’s constantly reliving horrifying events that occurred there years ago. Now the village is filled with vengeful spirits, and the only weapon to aid the twins is a magical camera.
Now, onto the game itself! When it comes to Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE‘s controls, give yourself time to get used to them as they’re different from most games you’ve played, but thankfully, there is a tutorial!
Headphones are a must as the sound and soundtrack are creepy and make your skin crawl (in the right way!), you’re probably going to want to turn on subtitles as some ghosts are hard to understand that speak through the radio.

Graphics and art-wise, WOW, I don’t know how else to describe it except they made the village and the buildings creepier than ever! The updated ghost designs are amazing, and the lighting engine really makes you want to play in the dark…I tried but failed, and ended up having to have the lights on.
Gameplay-wise, it’s a lot like how the original game was…and NOT like how the original game was. You can explore the village, but unlike in the original, there are now patrolling ghosts, whom you can sneak up on and take pictures of. A new mechanic added to the game is that ghosts can now become “Agrivated”, meaning that they gain health back, become stronger, and attack more instead of standing still. A new mechanic that was added is the use of a flashlight, which can not only find objects, but also attracts ghosts! There are fetch quests and puzzles that will help you learn more about the horrors of the village.
Overall, WOW! I’ve played the original back shortly after it came out, and this is amazing! This is how you do a remake! Most devs, when they remake a game from the ground up, tend to overdo it with adding new things, but here, it was done carefully. I like some of the newer elements added to the game; the patrolling ghosts and stealth attack mechanics are meh to me personally, but I’m sure someone will love them.
With the spooky upgrade, new places to go, creepy ambiance and soundtrack, improved ghost designs, upgraded camera mechanics, intense combat, intriguing story, it goes without saying, Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE is possibly going to be one of the top horror games, or THE top horror game of 2026, a 10/10!
Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE comes out on March 12th for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
