Barker’s novel is set in the 1980’s in Liverpool, England. Many decades before the book is set “The Seerkind” used their magic to create a secret world known as “The Fugue” (a carpet) where they could hide themselves and their most precious possessions and creatures from the humans out to destroy them. The carpet is left in the hands of a woman who has married one of the Seerkind. The story begins when the woman is hospitalized following a stroke. While in the hospital a young man, chasing a homing pigeon, discovers the carpet. When the woman’s granddaughter arrives she and the young man are drawn into protecting the Fugue from an exiled Seerkind who is bent on revenge.
