Vin Diesel announced a new series and film for the ‘Riddick’ franchise, yesterday, via Instagram. Next month work begins on the script for the film, titled ‘Furia’, to be written by Diesel and and director David Twohy.
Diesel and Twohy will also be working on ‘Merc City’, a series that explores the Merc and Bounty Hunters of the ‘Riddick’ universe.
‘Furia’ will be fourth film in the ‘Riddick’ franchise. The first film, ‘Pitch Black’, was released in 2000, follows a commercial transport ship and its crew, who are marooned on a planet full of bloodthirsty creatures that come out at night. The crew discover that a month long eclipse is coming. An escaped convict named Riddick is their one hope for survival. The second film (2004), titled ‘The Chronicles of Riddick’ finds Riddick battling the “Necromongers”, an invading empire, planning to kill or convert every human on the planet. 2013’s release, ‘Riddick’, the badass finds himself stranded on a scotched planet. He finds himself up-against a race of of alien predators. After activating an emergency beacon, two ships are alerted, one carrying a new breed of bounty hunters, the other ship is carrying someone from Riddick’s past. The title of the new film, ‘Furia’ suggests that the movie could be exploring the origins of the Furyans, a hardy race of spiritual warriors. ‘Riddick’ happens to be a Furyan. Unfortunately, the Necromongers wiped out most of the race. There is no word yet on the exact plot or when the titles might premiere.
