This morning I sat down to watch a movie that I had heard good things about, Final Girl. The film, directed by Tyler Shields, opened with a young girl sitting across a table from a stranger (Wes Bentley). During their conversation the man asks the girl a series of questions, gauging her answers to see if she is the girl he’s looking for. It’s revealed during the questioning that both of the girl’s parents are dead. He asks if she wants to come with him, so that he can train her. Her response? “Can I have ice cream?” Maybe it’s just me, but I would be asking a few more questions.

In the next scene we see him teaching Veronica (Abigail Breslin) to fight. Her mission is assigned, take down a ring of killer friends, who like to hunt down blonde girls for fun. Of course, she sets it up where she happens to catch their attention. The leader of the group, played by Alexander Lugwig (Vikings), makes her the group’s next target. He picks her up as if they’re going on a date and takes her to the woods… I won’t spoil it for you.

Final Girl’s cinematography looked more like an art house film than a horror flick and it was lovely. Everything was in drab tones except for Veronica, she’s in a bright red dress most of the film. Unfortunately, this is where the compliments stop for Final Girl. There are so many gaps in the story line and it left me with so many questions. What happened to her parents? What drove Bentley’s character to train this strange girl? Why do the boys hunt girls and why only blondes? Is she going on more missions? Why is she sexually attracted to the man who raised her? The list goes on.

The male characters were strange, not scary, just bizarre. Everything felt out of place. It made no sense for for the guys to be dressed in black-tie fashion, in the woods while hunting. If the boys weren’t hallucinating the film would have been completely dull. Over all, the acting was just bad on everyone’s part. The story line was shallow. It all felt completely fake.  In my opinion, Final Girl is a waste of time. If I had paid to see it, I would have been upset. Thank God for Netflix!

Alexander Ludwig also starred in the 2015 horror film The Final Girls. We wouldn’t want you to confuse the two movies, The Final Girls is actually pretty good, unlike Final Girl.
