Lauren Cohan, best known for her role as Maggie on the hit series The Walking Dead, stars in the 2016 horror film The Boy, written by Stacey Menear and directed by William Brent Bell. Rupert Evans, James Russell, Jim Norton, Diana Hardcastle, and Ben Robson co-star.
Cohan stars as Greta, a young woman fleeing a bad relationship. When Greta arrives at the beautiful Heelshire estate thinking that she has been hired to take care of a young boy, only to find out that she has been hired to care for a doll that the older couple uses as a substitute for their son who tragically died in a fire many years ago. As the couple leave for a holiday Mr. Heelshire (Jim Norton) gives Greta a schedule and list of daily activities she must carry out with Brahms. When Greta neglects to follow the instructions she notices that not only does Brahms move when no one is looking, he also likes to play games. She has befriended the local grocery delivery man Malcolm (Rupert) and reveals to him the strange things happening with the doll. The two are not sure what to think of the strange situation, which only gets more complicated when her ex shows up at the estate demanding she come home. The arrival of her ex sets off a chain of events that no one could see coming.
I’ve heard a lot of mixed reviews for The Boy, but I can honestly say that I really liked it. The movie’s twist was a fantastic idea and really turns the film in a complete 180. Cohan does not disappoint. The role of the doll, the way it was handled was smart and well played. You never actually see the doll move, which was a gamble, but fortunately ended up coming off perfectly.
So, would I recommend The Boy? I absolutely would. You can pick up your copy on DVD and Blu-ray today.
