Universal Hunts Down New Writer For Van Helsing

News comes today that there has been a change involving the reboot of ‘Van Helsing’, part of their new shared monster universe. The new version of ‘Van Helsing’ was originally written by Eric Heisserer, the writer behind 2016’s sci-fi hit ‘Arrival’, ‘Lights Out’ and 2011’s ‘The Thing’, and Jon Spaihts (Doctor Strange). Now, ‘Wrath of the Titans’ scribe Dan Mazeau will be taking over writing duties. There has been no word yet on why the change has been made. The character of Abraham Van Helsing originally appeared in Bram Stoker’s classic novel ‘Dracula’ back in 1897. Part fearless vampire hunter, part occultist and part doctor. Over centuries, the character has be reimagined and updated. A perfect example of his evolution is the Van Helsing we met in the 2004 film by the same name. In the films and novels where he has been mentioned, it is always as a hunter of evil. Heisserer’s vision for the film was something dark

Writer-Director Jordan Peele Speaks Out About The Social Commentary Of ‘Get Out’

If any genre is the ideal platform to express social commentary, it’s horror. Just think back to films like ‘They Live’ and ‘Night of the Living Dead’. In a new featurette (via Bloody-Disgusting) Peele explains why he made ‘Get Out’ and why the subject needs to be addressed. The film follows Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) and his girlfriend, Rose (Williams) who have reached the meet-the-parents milestone of dating, she invites him for a weekend getaway upstate with Missy (Catherine Keener) and Dean (Bradley Whitford). At first, Chris reads the family’s overly accommodating behavior as nervous attempts to deal with their daughter’s interracial relationship, but as the weekend progresses, a series of increasingly disturbing discoveries lead him to a truth that he could have never imagined. Daniel Kaluuy and Allison Williams star in the lead roles in the ‘Get Out’. Betty

Short Film Review: Girls Night

Halloween night is approaching and three young women, Alyson, Chloe and Jess. have decided that a night out among scores of people is not something they’re interested in. Instead they would rather have their own girls night in, enjoying food and drink, and each others company. As Alyson is preparing for this intimate gathering, a creepy masked stranger startles her while intrusively snooping around the kitchen window. Despite dropping and breaking a plate out of surprise, she will at least have an interesting story to share later. But as the evening wears on, and win is consumed, andtales of Bloody Mary are bandied about, the trio may find there is still more to the story where the masked stranger is concerned. The story behind David Teixeira’s short film has a familiar tone, but is lacking some elements to drive the narrative and build suspense or fear. Also the concept of a horror story featuring a masked stranger and urban legends,

Reel Nightmare is a “Reel” Flop

I usually try to be pretty kind with movie reviews and I am fairly easy to please, but I have been racking my brain to find the pros outweighing the cons for Armand Petri’s Reel Nightmare. I watched the movie in a couple of sittings and absolutely couldn’t get hooked. I could see where the film was going and what Petri was trying to do, but it just fell absolutely flat. Not only was the acting blah, but the story was lost in the absolute cluelessness of the characters. Little things like not even mentioning the blacked out eyes of one of their friends after being possessed. Madeleine Heil, who plays the lead Sophie, was actually pretty good. But other than that, I’m sorry. Over the top stereotypes of horror tropes, homosexuality, machismo, and damsel in distress were laughable if not offensive. On the positive side, the plot was tried and true and the effects (both makeup and paranormal) really
