If you suffer from Coulrophobia (the fear of clowns) you’re going to have a rough year. There are several clown themed movies headed our way this year, including Stephen King’s IT, Clowntergeist, and Crepitus. Now, a new film is on our radar, Behind the Sightings.
Last summer, a wave of creepy clown sightings throughout the country had some citizens so terrified they refused to leave their houses. Clowns stalked children and roamed the streets with painted faces and weapons in hand. Some clowns even attempted to lure children into the woods with promises of candy. Finally the clowns disappeared. Now, after nearly a year has passed, Behind the Sightings wants explore the phenomenon, promising to bring the nightmares back of creepy clowns hiding in the shadow.
Tommy V Films has nabbed the rights to Behind the Sightings, part documentary and part found footage film and has announced an October release.
Tony H. Cadwell was in the director’s chair for the film based on Todd and Jessica Smith’s 112 hours of footage collected for a documentary based on the sightings. What the two filmmakers uncovered is a lot more terrifying than just some jerks out to scare for laughs.

Executive producer Tommy Vlahopoulos and Tony Cadwell had this to say, according to Deadline:

Clowns have traditionally been associated with slapstick style performance, comedy or mime. But there has always been a dark side to a clown. This is not fake news. ‘Behind the Sightings’ is centered around the terrifying clown sightings that shook the world last year, and an eager couple (Todd and Jessica) swept up in all the phenomenon. This is a very newsworthy subject, especially with all the continuous clown sightings.”

The plan is to market the film in a similar way as The Blair Witch. People may have a hard time believing it is real though. Yes, many were fooled by the marketing for Blair Witch, but audiences have come a long way since 1999.
Check out the trailer for Behind the Sightings, in theaters just in time for Halloween.
