I recently moved from Canada and so, to celebrate that life change, I thought that I would do a quick article about one of the most notorious crimes and trials in Canadian history.

You cut off his legs…
You cut off his arms…
You cut off his head…
How could you Mrs Dick?
How could you Mrs Dick?

This once-popular nursery rhyme discusses the murderess Evelyn Dick (born October 13, 1920) in Beamsville Ontario.  She was found guilty for the press-titled Torso Murders.

In 1946, a group of children playing found a human torso…just the torso.  It was finally determined that he torso belonged to Evelyn’s (late) husband, Donald.  It was discovered that his arms, legs, and head had been disposed of in the furnace of his own home.  His wife, Evelyn, who was well known for her beauty, was quickly arrested, found guilty of the murder, and sentenced to hang.  However, she was acquitted and remained free until the next year when the partially mummified remains of her infant son were found in her attic.  She would not go free this time.  Evelyn Dick was sentenced to life in prison.

Evelyn’s luck would continue, nonetheless, and she was paroled after only 11 years, given a new identity and disappeared into a new life.

The crime has largely been forgotten due to time and many more modern and vicious crimes, but at the time, Evelyn Dick rocked the country with the murder of her husband and infant.
