Get ready to trust the unknown this Valentine’s Day! Master of suspense M. Night Shyamalan has officially dropped the jaw-dropping first trailer for his upcoming film Remain, giving fans a first look at Jake Gyllenhaal and Phoebe Dynevor.

The footage kicks off like a classic rom-com with a montage of moments shared between young lovers Wren (Dynevor) and Tate (Gyllenhaal). However, in true Shyamalan fashion, nothing is what it seems. The mood takes a terrifying turn as Wren asks why they cannot be together, prompting a chilling reply. What follows spirals into supernatural dread.

A Powerhouse Cast Meets a Blockbuster Romance

Joining heavyweights Gyllenhaal and Dynevor is a massive supporting cast. It includes Ashley Walters, Julie Hagerty, and Jay O. Sanders. Tracy Ifeachor, Hannah James, Caleb Ruminer, Kieran Mulcare, and Maria Dizzia join the fray.

The film shares its narrative roots with romantic fiction legend Nicholas Sparks, who developed the story alongside Shyamalan before crafting his own novel of the same name. Shyamalan produces the project alongside Ashwin Rajan through Blinding Edge Pictures. Sparks’ producing partner, Theresa Park, backs it, with Sparks serving as executive producer.

While originally slated for a Halloween 2026 release, Remain ultimately shifted to its prime February date. Shyamalan recently raised anticipation even higher by revealing that Remain scored the highest test-screening scores of his entire legendary career, which is a shock. After all, the director has delivered 16 feature films, including The Sixth Sense, The Visit, and 2024’s Trap.

Celebrating the Master of Suspense

The excitement surrounding Shyamalan’s latest project comes right as genre film fans prepare for a major career retrospective. Beyond Fest has officially partnered with MUBI and the American Cinematheque to present Night Visions: The Shock and Awe of M. Night Shyamalan, a special event celebrating the iconic director’s filmography beginning October 10.
