After a stall in Universal’s Dark Universe following The Mummy, the next film is finally on the way. Variety is reporting that Upgrade director Leigh Whannell has signed on to direct the reboot of The Invisible Man and is reuniting with Jason Blum who is producing the film. Whannell, who will also co-produce The Invisible Man, teamed up with Blumhouse on Insidious: The Last Key and  Upgrade.

Universal’s President of Production Peter Cramer has stated that the studio is excited to take a more individualized approach to each movie from “creative directors with distinctive visions.”

Johnny Depp was previously set to star but has since stepped away. According to sources, he may be taking a different role in one of the upcoming Dark Universe films.
In the original 1933 film adaption of H.G. Well’s novel a scientist, played by Claude Rains, discovers the key to invisibility, unaware that it will cost him his sanity.
The Dark Universe will also be delivering new versions of the classics, Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Wolf Man, and The Bride of Frankenstein.
