Director Danny Boyle has officially confirmed that the third installment in the 28 Days Later franchise is in the works after sixteen years while speaking to The Independent. Boyle also confirmed that he is teaming up once again with writer Alex Garland who he worked with on the original film.
While few details are available for the third film, according to a statement Garland made back in 2015 the film will jump forward and is “…likely to be 28 Months than 28 Years.”
Released back in 2003, the original zombie film starred Cillian Murphy as a Jim, who wakes up from a 28-day coma only to find that a zombie virus had destroyed society. In 2007 the film’s sequel 28 Weeks Later picks up after the virus had turned Great Britain into an undead battlefield. The US Army is helping some residence resettle parts of London, but things do not go as planned.
