Last year we reported that filmmaker Robert Rodriguez was returning to his roots and making a movie with the budget of just $7000, the same budget he had for his breakout film El Mariachi.
The film, titled Red 11, was inspired by the medical experiments Rodriguez went through himself to raise the money for El Mariachi thirty years ago.
The film is set “in the dark, twisted world of legal drug research. College kids turn lab rats to make quick money. The pic’s protagonist Rob (who is assigned the color and number Red 11), is trying to buy his way out of a huge debt to the tune of $7K. But things get surreal when he’s not sure if the hospital is really trying to kill him, or if it’s the side effects from the experimental drugs.”
Rodriguez wrote the script with his son Racer, based on the original script Robert wrote in the ’90s.
Since Red 11 made its world premiere at March’s SXSW fans have been eagerly awaiting the film’s release. Finally, details have arrived and they are surprising. Red 11 will be released on the streaming service Tubi this summer.
If you don’t know about Tubi, you should. The free streaming service features a library of over 20,000 movies and series and has a huge selection of horror films. Did I mention it’s free?
Here’s a clip from Red 11 that will make you forever terrified of getting blood drawn.
