It’s a fact, horror-comedies are hit and miss, most often, they’re a miss. But every once in a while, one nails it, think Tucker And Dale Vs. Evil and Shaun of the Dead. I am happy to report that I have come across a movie that should be added to that list, Werewolves Within. I can definitely see it becoming a quick classic.
From director Josh Ruben and writer Mishna Wolff (LOL Wolff, how appropriate.) comes a twisted tale of a small, secluded town that is about to find itself at the mercy of a beast. Finn, the new forest ranger arrives in town and soon he and the new postal worker, Cecily, find themselves locked in a house filled with insane neighbors who are all trying to survive a brutal killer, a werewolf.
While the movie is bloody, gory, and filled with death, it’s a blast to watch as the clues begin to pile up leading them to the discovery of who the killer hiding among them is while dishing out dialogue and a story that are unexpected, fun, and filled with snarky attitude.
Werewolves Within keeps you on your toes with great unexpected twists and a ton of action. Movies like this often make the mistake of trying too hard and taking themselves too seriously, not this flick. It knows it’s here to entertain, but don’t be mistaken, it makes a lot of clear statements about society such as greed, pettiness, jealousy, and prejudice. The main message, there is a beast inside us all.
The cast, led by Sam Richardson, Milana Vayntrub also includes George Basil, Sarah Burns, Michael Chernus, Catherine Curtain, Wayne Duvall, Harvey Guillén, Rebecca Henderson, Cheyenne Jackson, Michaela Watkins, and Glenn Fleshler. They NAILED it! Each played into their character’s strengths while embracing many of horror’s classic tropes but somehow, they make them feel fresh and fun.
I had high hopes for the movie before I hit play, which is usually a huge mistake, but not this time, Werewolves Within did not disappoint! It really is a great movie.
Werewolves Within will leave you howling with laughter while giving gorehounds the blood they crave. I am happy to slap my stamp approval on it! In fact, it’s earned its way onto our “Top Ten Best Horror Movies of 2021” list that will be out this December. Be sure to add it to your “must-see” list! It opens in theaters on June 25, 2021, followed by its release On Demand on July 2, 2021, from IFC Midnight.
